12/13/2023 0 Comments Jump desktop to make ipad into laptopJump Desktop can solve one of those problems. Sounded great but it failed for 2 reasons - I still had hardware at home and why not then just have a cheap windows laptop. What if I remoted in to a cheap desktop at home? I could use that for windows apps when I needed. Try as I might, the apps and touchscreen never fully gave me the windows like experience I needed for some of my work. Kobayashi Maru.įast forward more years than I want to count, and I am struggling with my iPad concept. I got out of homework and tests for my computer class. I quickly finished, and then just waited until I had a witness in the room to show-off and proclaim my new high score. I thought I was busted, but luck was on my side, he forgot his lunch and walked back out. One down with one to go, my teacher walked in. So with floppy disk in hand, I had to upload the program into both mini-frames undetected. I needed to make the time believable and yet out of reach because a faster time would still show me as the best time and score. not the most elegant solution, but I pasted in my name and a time of 0.39s. I tried many things to find loopholes and in the end I settled on hardcoding. I didn't know much about coding, but I spent days going through the printout of the code. I took the disk home, loaded it on my Tandy MC-10 and went to work. Quietly one day I made my way to the front of the room, slipped my 5.25" disk and downloaded the program all without being noticed. Did I have to beat the score or did I have to just make it look like I beat the score? The impossible situation to this 7th grader, until I changed the premise of the question. 0.44s was the best I could do, I could never reach his 0.42. That despite my best efforts I couldn't best his reaction time. And after a couple of weeks of trying I came to the sad resolution that I hit my ceiling. I stayed late, I went in during study halls, during lunch, I came in early, improving my score. And in my mind there was no way I wasn't going to win that challenge. And then one day I heard the challenge: "If you can beat my score in the typing game you get an Automatic A for the year and you don't have to do any homework" said Mr. These are affectionately known as "Trash-80s". My computer class had two TRS-80 (Radio Shack) Mini-Frames with a handful of dumb terminals connected. I was in 7th grade and computers were making their way into classrooms. Impossible you say? Kobayashi Maru is what I say. I wanted my iPad to be an iPad when I wanted and to also be a Windows Laptop when I needed - no other PC hardware in my possession. And I wanted to get to two devices : my phone and my iPad Pro but still have Windows and still be able to use a mouse. As with most of my colleagues our tech drawers look like this : iPhone/Android, Home PC/Laptop/Mac, Work Laptop, iPad or Tablet. Sure there's the Microsoft Office Suite native, there are plenty of apps out there, smart keyboard cases and all but it still can't match a laptop for some things.Īnd that's been my quest. Yes, just pretty good for most business users. Long battery life, stable OS, small easy to use form factor, vivid screen, perfect for browsing, for gaming, for movies and videos, excellent for video conferencing, and pretty good for business productivity. I think the iPad (and in particular the iPad Pro) is the perfect all around device. Just as the latest challenge I solved the other night. I was in 7th grade and I encountered one these challenges that I still vividly remember today. My love of winning the no-win situation stems back many years. And that's a skill all leaders need to possess.Īs a leader in an organization I am often challenged by situations that seem impossible to tackle but our survival depends on circumventing the situation. To me, he changed the premise of the question from how do you handle defeat to how do you avoid it. He reprogrammed the simulation so that there was a way to win - he cheated to some. That's because he didn't believe in the no-win situation, he didn't believe that the no-win situation could exist. Except, it didn't work that way for one person - Captain Kirk pictured above. It is designed to see how future leaders handle defeat: do they run away, do they go out in a blaze of glory, do they find the noble sacrifice. If you don’t know what the Kobayashi Maru is you can rest easy tonight knowing you aren’t a nerd (or at least a Trekkie). Kobayashi Maru is a simulation in the Star Trek universe that tests oneself against the no-win situation.
